PROMPT// Explore the role of Victor Frankenstein in relation to his monster. What responsibility does Victor, as the creator, have toward his creation?

WORD COUNT// 317

Victor finally figures out the secret to life and how to bring things to life. He creates a monster that he scares himself with. He creates this being and abandons it to figure out life on its own. Parents are supposed to raise up their creation and teach it how to live life. It is not society's responsibility to raise up a "parent's" creation. Society is not the one who created the being. Victor abandoned this creation because he was fearful of what he had created. He was worried for himself and didn't want to take care of what he was responsible for. This monster that Victor created was most likely deformed and not like other humans in the world. Creations like the monster should not be isolated from society or from anything that normal humans would get to experience. When Victor abandons this creature he leaves it to teach itself and to learn from the world and not be nurtured by a parent. Every child doesn't necessarily need mothering to be a human, but having that in a creature's life helps it to live a life that he feels is worth living. Victor's role to the monster is to nurture and care for it. He figured out how to put life in something and he received the product of what he worked so hard to figure out. He needs to be the parent that any living thing deserves to have. The creature deserves to feel worthy regardless of what the parent feels toward the creature. Any living creature in this world has some sort of parent, and regardless of what their situation is like, the parent(s) are responsible for raising their kid in a loving way. Victor may not feel responsible for the life that he has created because he his fearful, but regardless of his feelings, he still is responsible for his living creation.

Janie's Comment// I agree with Ellis that Victor does have some obligation to his monster in a guardian’s capacity. It is impractical to expect a child or something brand new to the world to know how everything works. I however do not think that Victor owes love and nurture to the creature. I do not think it is truly a life, but only a piece of scientific research. I understand that his goal was to create life, but it is clear he created at most a perverted version of life. The monster does not deserve to be loved or made to be more human; the monster needs to be contained.
