Sublime

Prompt// Explore the significance of sublime nature (the healing, majestic, and awe-inspiring qualities of nature) in Frankenstein?

Word Count// 291

I believe that Victor visits several beautiful places in the book because that is his one way to escape from his dark life. His life is full of dark places and hardships. The one place that he can get somewhere and see something beautiful is when he can escape to these places. Victor places himself in a dark place whenever he is trying to figure out how to create life. He choses not to eat, not to shower, and not to see any person. When someone does this to themselves, most of the time they end up depressed and sad. He escapes to somewhere beautiful to escape from the depression that he caused himself. He is also faced with hardships when Mo starts to kill some of his loved ones.

The one thing he can do to escape all of this is to go to these "majestic" places to finally see beauty in his life. Sublime nature is almost like a saving grace for Victor's life. He would have been completely trapped in darkness if those types of places weren't there for him to escape to. Sublime nature also acts as something that is "healing" in Victor's life. It heals him from depression and sadness. It is something that gives him happy thoughts instead of dark and thoughts that are hard to wrestle with.

Ice represents being trapped in the book. In the beginning of the book Victor is seen trapped in ice and it ends the book that way as well. Victor is trapped several times in the book. One example is his selfish desires when trying to create a life take over and he is trapped in himself. Another example is when he is trapped in Mo's murderous rampage.
